Displayed below is an actual model account of the project. I have take out some irrelevant parts of the whole account.
——————————————————————————-
Yes, I was a model. Yes, I masturbated and ejaculated onto a canvas. Yes, the image of my semen is now hanging on someone’s wall.
I am still not quite sure how I was talked into serving as a model for Emery, but that is exactly what I did. I dropped my pants and went to town while he painted over a shiny gold canvas with deep green paint. Once the canvas was ready, I had the distinct honor of making a mess all over it.
And if this sounds like a good time to any of you, feel free to email Emery. He is always looking for willing models.
I must warn you, however, that whole thing was rather bizarre. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first modeling gig, but I certainly did not expect what I got. As I stood there pleasuring myself, it hit me that the whole thing was rather mundane. It felt like work. I was there to do a job. Granted, the job involved my pants being on the other side of the room, but it wasn’t a sexual job. In fact, the whole thing was very non-sexual.
And that was a bit of a problem. I found that it is very hard to deliver the goods when there is so little sexual stimulation to work with.
I kept wondering if that was what it felt like to donate sperm. You are being asked to ejaculate on command, but you don’t have the added help of sexual stimulation.
And it doesn’t even count toward my list of lifetime experiences.
But in the end I was able to do what I had gone there to do. And the painting turned out rather well. Unfortunately, photos of my piece are not yet available. Sorry, but you won’t be seeing my load today.
I wondered if I would be ashamed of myself after the fact, but I’m definitely not. Because the whole scene was lacking in any real sexual energy, it is hard for my Catholic guilt to get the better of me on this one. I simply aided in an art project.
I just happened to do it with no pants on
I had a few people tell me this old post was hard to find so it’s a re-post with a different title.
I recently had a conversation with a gentleman who was interested in the traditional model session. When he inquired about my work and what I was doing he found out quickly that the session is unlike anything he has encountered before.
In this one dialogue I found I had to really be able to articulate effective what was to happen. He asked important questions. I believe those questions are at the forefront of what most folks are curious about.
The following is the dialogue between the model and I. By adding this conversation to the group page in hopes that this will spark more questions so please feel free to ask, post and so forth. Enjoy.
Model: I’m curious to know about the things you wrote in your profile, do you mind elaborating on that for me?
Emery: Not at all. I’m doing a series of alternative male portraits. The portraits are intended to depict male sexuality in a more glamorous, non-crude way. I made a group for it on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=133648038386&ref=nf
Model: This sounds very interesting. I’m trying to imagine what your work looks like. I don’t use facebook very much, but I just read about your project. Somehow though, I missed the name (refer to the name of the project) how is it coming along for you so far?
Emery: it’s called “Coming Attractions”. I’m in need of models since my BFA show is coming up
Model: Interesting name, seems it could be interpreted many different ways. what kind of guys are you looking for? I’m trying to think if I know anyone who would fit your need.
Emery: The name is supposed to allude to the sexual nature of it and at the same time emphasize the entertainment value. To represent sexuality without race, age, sexual orientation and other physical modes of identifying beauty I have to use something else that all males have in common. The ideal guys would be on board with the concept; confident about their sexuality and their bodies. Basically the model would have to pleasure himself onto the canvas without the aid of another person.
Model: Are you referring to an orgasm when you say “pleasure himself”? Do you provide visual aids, are your models left alone when they do this, are you there, is there any further direction? This is fascinating stuff, what do you have so far? I totally missed the image on facebook, I think I get it now.
Emery: haha it’s okay. Yes I’m referring to orgasm. The model ejaculates onto the canvas. The problem with male sexuality is that when a male is presented as having any sexual identity (in media) he is almost always shown exploiting someone else in that environment. Think of beer commercials. There is always at least one female in the bar. So the purpose of the project is not to exploit anyone else but have a solo experience. Yes I am generally in the room when this takes place
Model: I think [that’s] fascinating. I don’t know that I’ve ever thought about this before, but it seems like I’ve seen work that would challenge your assertions, maybe not… I can’t be sure. So then, if I understand you correctly, you’re trying to capture the most intense expression of male sexuality without distraction of the male (or any other entity) form, is that correct? When you’re there, what is your purpose? It sounds like voyeuristic pleasure, do you hold the canvas, point with a stick, tilt the board, assure proper drying techniques?
Emery: Well it’s a little of all of those elements. First and foremost I have to say that this is pure work for me. This is what I do and this is what I’m in school for so there is no sexual pleasure or gratification that comes out of this process for me. To tell you the truth I have not been aroused once by anyone doing this work. My purpose in the room is mostly to capture the moment in the painting. While the model is doing his thing, I’m mixing colors and preparing the canvas with paint. The model is to keep in constant communication with me so that I know when to paint the canvas and how long he has until the moment arrives. Once the paint is at its ideal point I then tell the model he can go ahead with the process. It’s up to him how he chooses to do it. If needed, I do hold the canvas
Model: So, why do your models need to be so confident and comfortable with themselves if they won’t be seen in the final work?
Emery: Just to make the session with me a little less strange (if that’s possible). I would never ask someone to do something they are uncomfortable doing.
Model: So then, the journey to that end, that’s entirely random and unprovoked, or do you interfere in one way or another? is it important where or how the image makes contact with your canvas? Is this one piece you’re working on, or is each model given his own private canvas? how do you make the pattern show up? How do you prepare your canvas, is it blank or painted, do you do anything to it after the experience dries?
Emery: I think I answered most of this in the last e-mail. But it’s each model gets his own canvas. And again this is a professional setting where the model is alone in his solo work. I do nothing to help aid the model (aside from conversation)\
Model: Cool. Each model releases on a fresh canvas then. Your work sounds very provocative. What else have you done? How many canvases have you completed in this project so far? Have you had any trouble keeping your models focused on your work and not on you?
Emery: No trouble as of yet >knock on wood< I’ve had about 50/50 straight and gay males. Most guys on board are in it for the concept and not for the sake of getting off. My work is very provocative but only because of the close-minded nature of our culture. Most of my other work deals with other social issues and problems as well but this is the most sexual. I currently have about 10 pieces. I’m looking to get at least 25 by the end of dec.
Model: Yeah, well, that makes sense to me, since it’s a solo activity. How large are your canvasses?
Emery: the canvases are pretty big about 20x26. I do use this site mostly for models searches. I figured there would be more guys comfortable with the sexual nature of it here. But alas there aren’t many who are willing to look at the more serious side of the project. Question for you. Would you be ok if I used part of our conversation here as a Q&A type dialogue on FB or in my work?
Model: Will I be identified as “[my screen name]” or will I even be identified at all?
Emery: Good question. In keeping with the nature of the project your identity will always remain as secret or as public as you choose. Privacy is always a priority for me as a lot of the models may have families and such. But no not even “[your screen name]” will be shown
Model: I have no objections then. Use as much or as little as you like, and thanks for asking me first.
The work I produce highlights my interest in sociology through the art making process. More precisely my work investigates issues faced by marginalized subcultures and sheds light on topics that might otherwise seem taboo. In 2007, I began creating portraits of men by utilizing their ejaculation as a direct illustration of themselves. The series Coming Attractions studies male sexual performance first through a social lens and secondly through art.
One of the techniques that is vitally important to the work comes from the dada movement. I lean on the fundamental idea of “chance art” in order to capture the variation of male ejaculation. It is in this variation that I intend to both celebrate and normalize ejection. The vibrant colors seen in Coming Attractions are deliberately chosen to emphasize the variations that naturally occur from man to man. A survey is given to both participants and non-participants to better understand the social attitude toward male sexual performance.
My previous academic studies and artwork both concern gender roles and how they influence both sexes. This leads me to question the cultural social structure that gender roles impose. Unfair social pressures intimidate men from actively seeking an honest understanding of their bodies. To better understand male sexual performance insecurities, men must first know what is normal. Likewise, men must also be acquainted with the variance that occurs from male to male. I have found that male sexuality has been portrayed inaccurately with few attempts to understand real issues. Hence there is a lack of real in-depth dialogue about the male body. I hope to create a discussion of the basic biological function most men share but which is taboo.
